Is a static front page better for SEO than blog?

I’m new to wordpress and was wondering is there any benefits to having a static or blog style homepage? Does google read the blog style homepage the same way? Is it still important to include an extra couple hundred words outside of the blog posts on the homepage in say the footer for SEO purposes? Thanks
