Hi! I’ve been using both Wordfence and my current setup for about a year. In the last few weeks, we’ve started having issues with IPNs failing. In a quick look through this forum, it seems that others have had the same issue, but my IPNs are returning a 500 error rather than a 403.

PayPal support says the error they’re seeing is:

I/O error on POST request for "https://horsepro.tv/": Unrecognized SSL message, plaintext connection?; nested exception is javax.net.ssl.SSLException: Unrecognized SSL message, plaintext connection?

Our host says everything is working fine with SSL and they are not seeing any 500 errors, but that it looks like the POST requests may not be reaching the server and could potentially be blocked by the firewall. I’ve tried disabling Wordfence and still had the same issue, but Siteground support pointed out that the rules related to Wordfence in the htaccess could be the issue. I can’t see any being blocked in live traffic.

    Any thoughts? Thanks!

Hi @streamlineequine, thanks for your message.

The only issues I would expect from Wordfence and IPNs could be when Learning Mode needs to be used to allow a connection that is detected as a false positive. In this case however, you would be seeing Wordfence error pages and before allowing the action in the firewall, disabling Wordfence would also fix the “problem”.

This error message seems consistent with other cases where an HTTPS server is attempting to call an HTTP server. As the error is coming from PayPal’s end, this could either mean that the SSL on your site is not working as expected or perhaps using a different port number to the expected 443. If you are using any SSL plugins for WordPress you may need to check the settings or reach out to their support to see if anything is misconfigured that might be making a non-HTTPS request to PayPal. Also checking the referrer PayPal are expecting from your site or any plugins implemented for the PayPal transactions on your site might be necessary.

Let me know how you get on.

    Peter.
