iPhone/iPad popup keyboard obscures date picker

How do I disable the touchscreen keyboard from popping up and obscuring the date picker when someone clicks in a form field with the “date” field type on an iPhone or iPad? The user then can’t pick a date with the date picker but if they want to use the only other option to type in a date, they have to manually select and delete the existing mm/dd/yyyy value from the field before they actually type anything else in. I’d rather they just have access to the date picker and not have it obscured by the keyboard. How do we make this happen?
