iOS must play large video first

My experience is that when the gallery is viewed on an apple mobile device one must play the large video first then the thumbnails behave correctly.
If you load the page and tap a thumbnail the large player area goes black and stays that way no matter how many thumbs are tapped.
Works great on OS X Safari and chrome though. I’m wondering if I turn on autoplay will it force the thumbs to behave.
