Hi

I’m getting a strange behavior with jetpack “site accelerator (previously photon)”. So, I edit a jpg image in photoshop, upload it to my wordpress website, everything works great as expected.

If I download the image now hosted at for example “i0.wp.com”, I can’t open it in photoshop, it gives me an error “Could not complete your request because an unknown or invalid JPEG maker type is found”.

I noticed the same behavior in Adobe Premiere. When I download an image hosted from “i0.wp.com” I get the error importing “The file cannot be opened because of a header error”.

Of course, that I can download the original working jpg removing from the url https://i0.wp.com/.

Any thoughts on why this is happening?

Hi Fotis, thanks. I’m using firefox.

Just realize now that it only happens when I download trough firefox, if I download trough chrome there is no problem.

Interesting, they’ll only be WebP under Chrome, since Firefox does not yet support WebP.

Under Firefox they do download as JPEG, and I also have a problem opening them, but no problem with them loading in the browser.

Have you noticed any problems with them loading in-browser, or just with the downloads?

Are you on macOS by any chance? If so, it appears to be a limitation of macOS: https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/382499/a-downloaded-webp-image-from-a-website-could-not-be-opened

Firefox and Chrome support WebP, so they actually load a WebP formatted image, but the problem comes in here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1248840

On download, Firefox adds the .jpg file extension even though it downloads the WebP version.

So, there are two problems at play here, unfortunately out of our control:

1. Not all macOS apps can open WebP images, most notably Preview, so macOS doesn’t really have a way to address improperly named WebP files.

2. Firefox is adding the wrong file extension on download.

Overall, unfortunately the solution is to wait for Firefox to fix their bug, but it would also be nice for macOS to support WebP files.

Ah good, then it would just be the Firefox bug then. If you change the downloaded file’s extension from .jpg to .webp it will open.

Just an update, i can now confirm that the latest Firefox update solved de issue.
