    Good Morning!

I built out this website and added the charitable plugin years ago but since moved away and didn’t volunteer for the organization anymore. They’ve left it mostly untouched and realized they aren’t getting any of their donations.

“Invalid Business email in the IPN response.” Is the error Paypal is giving. (I’m still working on gaining access to the Paypal account) Is it just a mismatch between gateway settings and where the emails are going in Paypal? Once fixed, how can i reprocess these gifts?

    Thanks!

    Thanks for reaching out.

WPCharitable usually returns that message when Paypal when email being returned in Instant Payment Notification (IPN) doesn’t match the Paypal email in Charitable settings. You might see “IPN data:” and then some information next to this if you see this next to the reported error in the donation log. I would start off if you can confirm BOTH. Chartiable usually denotes a failure on the donation if these do not match.

Thank you! will I be able to reprocess the donations once that is fixed, or is it going to have to be them reaching out to those donors and asking them to donate again?

@klpinney that depends on what exactly happened, but I would check with the Paypal account first to see if the donations made it. IF they did – and they reached Charitable (but as failed donations) then you should be able to adjust the status of the failed donation in Charitable to “paid”. If Paypal didn’t collect, then you would have to of course reach out to your donors.

And of course, confirm the email addresses so the error doesn’t come up again.

If you want to feel free to let us know what happened, in case we can help out further, great.

Going to consider this resolved but feel free to reach out for any further assistance!

Clarifying question as I still work with my client on getting this resolved. The fix is in the Paypal account, correct? Not in the charitable settings in WordPress?

Ie. the login email is paypal@domain but their notifications from Paypal are being sent to office@domain but those need to be the same.

As discussed WPCharitable usually returns the message you first shared when Paypal when email being returned in Instant Payment Notification (IPN) doesn’t match the Paypal email in Charitable settings. So you can adjust the email setting in Charitable as a possible resolve. You also have the option of turning on/off the IPN on the same settings screen, although unusure with the limited information we have if that will resolve (it sounds like email).

I would also like to share this general PayPal IPN troubleshooting document in case you need it for the future: https://www.wpcharitable.com/documentation/paypal-ipn-troubleshooting/
