Invalid API Key for Akismet

  • I would like to activate Akismet but after I Activate it, it tells me I have an invalid API Key. Please double-check it. When I go to my account page, I see nowhere that has my API Key..?

    I am sure someone has experienced this before. Do I not get an API key when I signed up?

  • Please contact your host. The cause is they have either disallowed the use of the fopen function which is used to try to contact the Akismet servers or they don’t allow access to port 80 outbound from your box.

    How do you “activate” it? Do you just activate the plugin and nothing else? ’cause if you do that, yes, it’ll ask you for the key, and then you have to go into the Akismet configuration and put in your key.

    You have to *get* your API key by goinf to wordpress.COM and signing up for an account. As soon as you sign up, it’ll send you an email, and then you log in and get your key.

    I already signed up a while ago and have an account. My blog is located at https://www.partygps.com/blog/. But I went back and my welcome email never had a API key in it and it’s not listed in the section it should be. Did I maybe sign up for a different type of account?

    I am activating Akismet by going to the plug-in section in WordPress admin.

    I think the problem is with my host, media temple.

    OK, I think I got it. Basically, I think I just setup a blog and not a WordPress account when I set up the site. You only get a API Key when you sign up for a WordPress account which I just did and saw the API Key. I then went to my blog admin Dashboard and entered that key and didn’t get an error message or anything so I think Akismet is good to go now.
