• Hi guys, wondering if anyone can help me, I have setup a WordPress site as an intranet which works great however I can’t link to shared files on a network share.

Within HTML you can create a link using the “file://server name/share name/file.etc” however using the menu feature built in WordPress it won’t allow “file://” for links only https:// etc…

Has anyone got any ideas or a solution to this?

    Thanks in advance.

  • Is there any particular reason why you wouldn’t use the https:// URL to keep all things standard?

Problem is https:// only works with web severs, the internal documents are stored on file servers using network shares.

I am able to copy the documents across to the WordPress server and then link to them using https:// links no problem. But the issue I have is amendments, every time a document is changed it would mean copying it across every time.

Our current intranet is developed using basic HTML and works fine with “file://” links.

At a minimum, one needs to call the local executable and then the /switch (in this case the share path/file-name)…this is most often done with a network script, (and permissions)…loading local content in browsers is outdated…let me hack you and load my script in local is the example…it’s bad practice and insecure.

Thanks for the information, does anyone have a secure alternative solution to this ?
