• I had a thread running but stopped receiving answers and thought maybe it was because I posted additional information before receiving responses. So I am sorry if I was supposed to continue my previous thread.

The links going into my blog are not working. The main page is up and looks correct but I cannot get anywhere from there.

I just move to a new host and changed to a new domain.
I went through phpMyAdmin to search and replace instances of my old url and made the additional changes when the character count of each url was included right before the url. But that did not change the problem.

So what else might be going on?

  • Try resetting your custom permalinks back to the default setting. If this works, then review Using_Permalinks before setting a custom permalink structure back up again.

Sorry, I did that too. It didn’t do anything.

I tried it this morning. My custom was and is back to /%category%/%postname%

But should I have done something else with that beyond simply saving the changes?

Your permalinks are malformed. Start by resetting your custom permalinks back to the default setting.

    Okay, done.
    What next?

I still see malformed custom permalinks on your site.

    (@rollercoasterider)

Okay, what does that mean and waht should I do?

Are you sure that you’re changing permalinks on the right site?

    I only have one blog.

I’ve been trying to read up in the meantime. I see quite a few references to the .htaccess but I can’t find it in my main folder. There is one in my public folder one level up, but it’s empty!

I just move to a new host and changed to a new domain.

Are you sure you are not resetting the permalinks on your old blog?

The host did all the moving for me.
    I’m in my admin.
The host said he is not familiar with wordpress and so was not able to offer additional assistance like he di with my forum–for which he has a lto of knowledge.

So is there somewhere I can go in my cpanel or something to make sure I’m at the right place.

There are two old folders in public_html that contain the blogs name–2 because of a convoluted subdomain issue that I had with the previous host and the host of my main site. We removed that association which was why I changed to a new domain name.

One of those folders does have .htaccess in it. There is not a lot in either , but that is there. I’d really like to get rid of them when I know I don’t need anything in them.

It sounds like a bad move and a current bad install. Right now., I suspect that you are logging into the wrong dashboard and that your convoluted subdomain issue is part of the problem with your custom permalinks.

Okay, so what do I do about that.

On Sunday or Monday I made some changes from my dashboard and they worked on the blog–my theme was not coming up and I got it working.

Sort out your “double” install first.

    (@rollercoasterider)

    First, before what?

I was just saying that I was able to fix something from my dashboard on Sunday or Monday. I wasn’t talking about another problem.

How do I sort out my double install?
    Contact my host?

I decided to write a test post. I may not be understanding what you mean, so I wondered if writing a post from my dashboard would make it come through on the blog which I see.

It worked and the new permalink worked for it too.
Does that mean I’m in the correct dashboard?

If it does, how do I go through and get the other permalinks to repopulate to the default format?

My blog is relatively new and I could do it by hand (YUCK). But I don’t know how to also update the category or series landing pages.

Once this is resolved can I change the permalink structure to a custom strucutre that starts with a number (such as year) between category and postname?

The new post is up…though all it say is that it is a test post. I want to remove it evenutally but will leave it up for now.
