    Internal server errors (error 500) are often caused by plugin or theme function conflicts, so if you have access to your admin panel, try deactivating all plugins. If you don’t have access to your admin panel, try manually resetting your plugins (no Dashboard access required). If that resolves the issue, reactivate each one individually until you find the cause.

    If that does not resolve the issue, try switching to the default theme for your version of WordPress to rule-out a theme-specific issue. If you don’t have access to your admin panel, access your server via FTP or SFTP, navigate to /wp-content/themes/ and rename the directory of your currently active theme. This will force the default theme to activate and hopefully rule-out a theme-specific issue.

    If that does not resolve the issue, it’s possible that a .htaccess rule could be the source of the problem. To check for this, access your server via FTP or SFTP and rename the .htaccess file. If you can’t find a .htaccess file, make sure that you have set your FTP or SFTP client to view invisible files.

    If you weren’t able to resolve the issue by either resetting your plugins and theme or renaming your .htaccess file, we may be able to help, but we’ll need a more detailed error message. Internal server errors are usually described in more detail in the server error log. If you have access to your server error log, generate the error again, note the date and time, then immediately check your server error log for any errors that occurred during that time period. If you don’t have access to your server error log, ask your hosting provider to look for you.

    This Is for Matt, I am having the same issue when I try to get to my website I get “Error Establishing Database Connection” or “Internal Server Error”. I am VERY new to working with a website and don’t understand the language of what to do to try and fix the issue. Can you help?

    Talk about hijacking a post? My site is still broken and live to hundreds of paying customers so I might think (besides it being my post and call out for emergency help) that that’s not that cool of you. Make your own post.

    I tried that but it doesnt work.
    It’s very complicated as to how this all happened. I tried installing a new plugin I just bought via dashboard, it gave me file exceeded error, so I uploaded it via ftp. Activated it,
    Shortly after internal server error 500, then got blocked out of cpanel for some odd reason? And a host of other issues since.

    Also the background of my site has suddenly shrunk? And the custom css in styles css plugin are not firing, making my site look very broken. Also some functionality is not working.
    Very weird.

    I checked my server and it needed some more ram, so I upgrade it to 2gb and more disk space.

    Here’s the error Im getting now.
    Im by no means an expert either. Self taught wordpress/web man.

    The way to cure 500 Internal Server Error doesn’t work through “deactivate all plugins when not able to access the administrative menus?”

    If everything is screwed up after installing a plugin, it’s probably being caused by that plugin. Deinstall it. There are ways to do that even if you don’t have access to the backend.

    People need to stop yelling in this thread, and people need to stop hijacking it.
