I’ve used jetpack for years, on a number of sites, but today I woke up to an internal server error (500)

I did the standard troubleshooting mode, also put cloudflare into developer mode and tried each plugin individually.

The only one that caused this error was jetpack.

I downloaded a new copy of jetpack and overwrote the existing, and upon activation, again we had the internal server error.

This is obviously a shame as the publicise and gallery features are great, though I suppose I could source them elsewhere and I don’t use much else out of jetpack on my main site.

    Any help would be great.

I’m sorry for the difficulties here.

I did the standard troubleshooting mode, also put cloudflare into developer mode and tried each plugin individually.

Did you try with only Jetpack enabled and all other plugins disabled? Did you receive the error then?

If so, please try temporarily switching to a default theme such as Twenty Twenty One to rule out a theme conflict.

If you are still having issues, I would recommend reaching out to your hosting provider. A 500 error like the one you’re experiencing is typically the result of a PHP fatal error. They can look at your server logs and tell you exactly what error is happening, which will help you to determine the cause of the issue.

Let us know how it goes and we can take another look as needed.

I had already spoken to the service provider – they were not actually getting any messages in the logs about the internal server error and found it all very strange.

It’s also odd that jetpack has worked fine on this site for a few years and now suddenly doesn’t work – something in your recent update causing issues?

oddly every time I deactivate jetpack and reactivate it I have to set it up again. Before I set it up, site is fine, post setting it up I get the internal server error.

However, to do what you asked above, I just activated jetpack and went through set up again… refreshed, cleared caches and all sorts… and ironically there is now no internal server error.

I wonder if there was something up with the Jetpack/Wordpress connection earlier as the internal server error happened after I connected my wordpress acc to jetpack.

I will see if I get the error again over the next few days but fingers crossed all is good.

I am having the same problem. Also started a about 3-4 hours ago.
I’bve disabled Jet Pack for now, so that my authors can get their content up. Will try refreshing caches and re-set up. So far, as soon as I enable jetpack, I can’t access dashboard.

We’ve seen a few reports of 500 errors on sites hosted with Siteground, but we have not been able to reproduce the issue so far.

In one case, Siteground were able to resolve the issue by downgrading from PHP 7.4 to 7.3, so that might be worth a try.

@jennipagano is your site also hosted with Siteground?

    Thread Starter Davidian

    (@the-odd-duck)

Just to update, it still seems fine.

@jennipagano – I wonder if re-uploading jetpack over itself would help as well. Maybe the auto-update missed something?

I don’t think that was what the problem actually was, as it was as soon as I connected my WordPress acc to jetpack that was the problem, before that stage the plugin could actually be on, but it could be a useful way for you to debug to see if you are getting the same problem.

@drawmyface – I’ve not needed to do the downgrade as it is still working since.. just odd that it took me a few hours of it not working and then it suddenly starting to work again, and the internal server error not actually hitting the internal siteground logs

    Hi @the-odd-duck

The behavior you related in your last message looks like a server glitch, maybe a memory overload causing a slowness at the site, even the FastCGI enabled could cause the error 500, and the logs don’t register them.

I recommend you to keep your site software fully upgraded and check with the hosting support if you had any memory outrage in the last few days.

Let us know if you have any questions.
