• Hi

I can’t get into my website and have received this message:

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request. Please contact the server administrator, [email protected] and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error. More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

I recently installed the latest version of wordpress.

I apologise in advance – I struggle with technical stuff at the best of times. My host said that I need to replace the access code with default wordpress .htaccess codes.

How on earth do I do this, or find the default access code? Also has anyone else found a way to fix this – who can explain it to a technical dummy!

  • Hi there,

You need to access to your Cpanel > File Manager

There will be a pop-up screen and make sure that the Web Root and Show Hidden Files (dotfiles) is checked.

Then you will be able to see your .htaccess file. Right Click on the file and click Code Edit.

Looking at the Error. I suspects that your host server does not allow Follow Symlinks.

So, look for Option FollowSymlinks not allowed here at the .htaccess file and have it remove.

    Good Luck ??

    Hi

Thanks for your help. I appreciate it.

Just to make things more difficult I don’t get a pop up screen when I access my file manager.

I found the web root under file manager, but no .htaccess file.

There is a separate folder in cpanel .htaccesseditor but nothing on there that seems to let me edit or access the code!

I see. May I know what control panel you are using from your Web Hosting company?

    Thanks

With your help and the help of my cousin it is sorted.

Apparently the site was attempting to use the wrong url as the home page!
