Intermittent user passwords not recognised & 502 Bad Gateway Errors

  • Hello, I am having a problem with my site running s2member version 150225. I am using PayPal as my payment gateway.

    A couple of symptoms which I believe may be related, important to say however they are both intermittent and I have not yet been able to recreate them. However I am getting plenty of users reporting seeing the issues which are:

    -When a user upgrades from a Level 0 to Level 1 and leaves the site to make the payment via paypal upon return they are asked to log back in – at this point there valid password doesn’t work. They can request resets but the new password also seems to fail. If however an Admin manually resets the password will then work.

    -Following an upgrade the site will report a 502 Bad Gateway error at the return from PayPal – sometimes this is after a login attempt as above – or it can be immediately

    I am struggling to find a solution to theses issues which are damaging our reputation, so any advice is appreciated.

  • The last time someone here reported problems with s2Member and PayPal payments, the problem turned out to be at PayPal’s end. (I think they were doing maintenance, or an upgrade, or something like that.) So I’d suggest first checking with PayPal.

    If PayPal says everything’s fine with them, then the next step would be to upgrade to the latest version of s2Member and see if that makes a difference.

    Hello, everything seems to be fine from the Paypal end, this is not a new problem – it’s been going on for months now so I am pretty confident the issue isn’t with PayPal.

    Interesting, I have not seen this reported before.

    It almost sounds like a theme or plugin conflict to me; i.e., working on the back end, not on the front end. I suggest that you start by trying to reproduce the issue in a clean installation, following the tips outlined here. See: https://s2member.com/kb-article/testing-in-a-clean-wordpress-installation/
