• Since Tuesday this week I am experiencing a lot of trouble logging in to the dashboard and after finally getting in and trying to post I have trouble adding media (get a blank window instead of all my media thumbnails). If I try to upload a new file it does not show up as a new image for me to insert but is added to the media library in multiples of 9 when I look in the media library. The message I get when trying to login or save my post is: …”can’t open the page because the server unexpectedly dropped the connection…”

These problems have been intermittent and originally I thought it had to do with updating to WP 3.5.2, but another site I manage has the same sort of trouble logging in. These sites have been up and running fine for a few months now. They are both hosted on GoDaddy. When I contacted GoDaddy tech support they said it has to do with WordPress and not the server, but I am not convinced.

Also I have tested all my plugins on my localhost server and I don’t think it is an issue with plugins since I don’t have the same trouble locally.

If this is a server issue, can you advise what steps can I take to fix?

  • Do you find the same problems if you switch to Twenty Twelve theme with all plugins off? Please try and let us know.

I just did the test ask you requested: switched all plugins off and switched to Twenty Twelve theme but the problem with the media library is still there. (No thumbnails appear to choose from to insert media.) I have been able to login all afternoon but had trouble this morning. Maybe these two issues are not linked. Any other suggestions? Also, for your reference my site is https://www.from-push-to-pull.comThanks for your help.

You may reinstall WordPress manually from a freshly downloaded copy except wp-content. Do not overwrite files/ folders but delete them before reinstalling.
Also try to run the upgrade manually via wp-admin/upgrade.php

Backup your site including database so that you can restore in case anything goes wrong.

So, I did the manual reinstall (deleting existing files except wp-content) and I also tried to run the upgrade through the admin upgrade button. The reinstall didn’t help and the upgrade button won’t work for me since it behaves like other changes I try to make to posts. I get the Safari: “can’t find the page, the server must be busy” message.

The reason I don’t think it is a WordPress upgrade issue is that another site I manage on the same server has similar problems, and I have not upgraded WP there.

    To recap my issues:

    1. intermittent trouble logging in, both sites.

    2. After many attempts (or after some time goes by) I can get in and do some things like create new posts, activate plugins, but when I try to save any changes to posts or admin settings I get the “Safari can’t open the page” message. If I refresh the page I get bumped back to my post lists or the setting page I was on and I can see that the changes are saved.

    3. I cannot add images to posts. Sometimes the media library appears in thumbnail form when I go to add media but if I select an image to add to post it does not appear in the post. Sometimes when I try to add media there are no thumbnails, just a blank window. If I add an image using upload image feature it doesn’t show up until I go to the Media Library and then it gets uploaded in multiples.

    What I have tried:
    1. Turning all plugins off.
    2. Activating theme Twenty Twelve.
    3. Reinstalling WP 3.5.2 via ftp, deleting existing files first
    4. Contacting Host tech support (they say it is a WP issue)

Any help or more ideas would be much appreciated! Thanks.

    Who is the host? GoDaddy?

    Yes, GoDaddy.

can’t open the page because the server unexpectedly dropped the connection…

It’s GoDaddy. It’s best to find a new host. See Recommended WordPress Web Hosting

Well I just paid for 2 more years with them so I’d rather be able to continue with them for now. Any idea what the server issue would be or how I should ask them about it?

Any idea what the server issue would be or how I should ask them about it?

Only they know. Or rather they don’t know. And they won’t be able to tell you.

Seriously, find a new host. This will only continue. Search theme forums for Godaddy and draw your own conclusions.

I can give that some thought. Thanks. But I see several other recent threads with similar issues around adding media, do you suppose these sites are all hosted at GoDaddy? Just wondering if there can be a common source of the problem besides the Host.

LOL – yeah there are other Add Media issues, but they aren’t the same kind of problem — intermittent is almost always a server issue. Try searching for GoDaddy…

I will do that for sure. But just to clarify, the login problems are intermittent, the problems adding media and saving changes are pretty much constant. Sigh.

All those actions involve the database and http (apache) server.

@anitagreen666 – I totally agree that a new host is the solution, but for the moment, don’t take no for an answer from them…

Thanks for all your advice. I will try to wrestle GoDaddy tech support to the ground on this, but I am not optimistic. It is helpful to know that it is not a WP issue so I don’t spend anymore time on those sorts of troubleshooting activities. ??
