• Last night when I went to bed the blog was working fine. When I woke up here’s what I found:

    In Firefox –
    – I couldn’t login to the admin panel (at first I got the error about trying to open index.php, and then it just failed)
    – The blog came up with a blank page

    In Explorer –
    – I couldn’t open the admin panel (said “Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage”)
    – BUT I could view the blog!!

I’m quite sure I didn’t do anything unusual before the problem occurred. I had the same problem once before, and I fixed it by backing up the database and reinstalling WordPress. Not a pretty solution once a site is up and running though.

Here’s what I did this time.

I followed the upgrade procedure (even though I have 2.51 running).

    1. I deleted all the .php files (except config.php) plus the wp-admin and wp-includes folders. (I didn’t delete htaccess or wp-content.)

    2. Then I renamed the plug-ins folder (rather than delete them all — since I couldn’t login there was no way to deactivate them)

    3. Then I attempted to run /wp-admin/upgrade.php (but it said there was no need to upgrade so I think nothing happened)

Despite the failure of step #3, the blog opened up again as normal.

I went back and renamed the plug-ins folder, and the blog continued to work with all the plug-ins enabled.

MY THEORY: I’m no expert at all, so take this with a giant grain of salt, but could this be a slow building error related to PHP? Something related to a cache for example? The first time it happened, I had been trouble shooting the blog and, in a short period of time, made many small changes. This time I was having trouble getting a post just right, so I kept editing and re-doing it several times in a row. Again, no major changes, but lots of editing, saving, and posting in a short period of time.

Keep in mind that the admin became inaccessible to BOTH Firefox and Explorer, and the blog became inaccessible to Firefox BUT STILL WORKED IN EXPLORER. Can anyone take a stab at how that could happen?

Now the site is working again essentially the same as before. I think it will go down again, and it’s only a matter of time. That’s why I’d still like to get a fix for this.

    Installed plug-ins are:

    Add-to-any
    Akisimet
    Category Posts Widget
    CryptX
    Simple Yearly Archive
    Wordpress Hashcash

  • What do your server/error logs show?

I have the same problem here. Anyone knows a fix?

I can’t open the wp-admin in any browser and I tried deleting the blog, reuploading it and upgrading like globalcompassion suggested.

This is a serious bug if you ask me.

I have the same bug for 4 days now. There must be, or at least should be, an easier way to solve it. It’s a serious bug which apperantly is quite common lately, and it’s time to find an affective solution to it.

It also started four days ago for me, has there been an update or something 4 days ago that caused it?

What plugins do you have activated?

If your WordPress breaks without you having changed anything, then hacking or web host problems are real possibilities.

Saem problem here – started 3 days ago. What the hell is going on?

I have the same problem for the last 4 days.

    Who is your web host?

    EnomCentral

I haven’t modified anything at that time. Another writer was logged in and posted something the day it started but he didn’t have access to any options that could have caused this, well nothing in the admin panel should be able to cause this really.

I’ve tried opening the wp-admin and wp-login.php in internet explorer, firefox and google chrome. In Internet explorer and firefox I get an error saying the page cannout be opened. In Google Chrome i’m redirected to wp-login.php from wp-admin but it says there are ‘to many redirects’?

Is anyone from wordpress familiar with this problem?

I am having a similar problem. I can actually view the blog using Firefox. When I type “www” before the URL, the page opens as if I’m already signed in, and without the “www,” I’m not logged in. In the first case, when I hit “site admin” each login I try fails completely..as in, nothing happens after I enter my login info. In the latter case, the same thing happens when I hit “log in”. So, in other words, I’m not getting an error message or anything. The log in just fails entirely. This is a problem because I can’t get into the admin to write a post at all. Any other ideas besides deleting the entire site and re-uploading??

i am having the same problem

i sometimes cant go to the main site, however i can loginto the admin side, and if i hit “view site” it works, however once i logout, then i cant view the site

i see everyone is having this issue and there are NO fixes.

Would be nice if someone from WP could look into this problem…

I’ll bet with FTP access I could fix your ‘problem’.

    as for this:

Would be nice if someone from WP could look into this problem…

its not a problem that “wordpress” needs to look into. The fact remains that 99.999999999999999% of these so called problems are user issues, or host issues, they are NOT wordpress problems.

Thats reinforced simply by the fact that you state the blog was working.

A working site doesnt just stop working of it’s own accord.

furthermore, this forum is a volunteer support forum. There isnt any “wordpress” here.

Bugs, REAL BUGS, that are entered into trac are looked at just as they should be.
