Intermittent Error Establishing Database Connection on VMs

    We have two Virtual Machines. The first is our application server running RedHat with WordPress 3.1.2, it’s public facing. The second is our database server, also running RedHat and MySQL, it’s on a private network. We are getting the dreaded “Error Establishing Database Connection” intermittently. (Yesterday 7 times, today twice.) When the error appears, if I do a refresh everything continues normally. The VMs are privately hosted (i.e. not using BlueHost, Google, etc.). Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot what the problem is?
