• I am getting intermittent 404 Not Found The Requested URL / not found on this server. This is not page dependant and can happen intermittently on any page. I have tried everything, disabling the theme, all plugins, optimizing, increasing memory limit, resaving permalinks, editing .htaccess (got a blank screen!). I am on the latest theme version, plugin version for all activated, I have tried to go to WordPress 7.7.1 but I get the message then.

I am not stripped back to minimal plugins and still get the problem:

One thing I have not tired is to change the PHP version to 7 from 5.6 but I am a bit nervous about doing that

I am hosted on a shared server, the hosts have tried rebooting the server and have finally suggested moving me to a Windows Server – should I say yes? Any help most gratefully received as it is driving me mad . Thanks

  • I am not able to reproduce the 404 issue on your site. All pages load successfully for me, but very slowly. Re. 404 I would check the error log in your host control panel. As for site speed, updating to PHP 7 should help, as would a caching plugin. Looks like your site is very heavy on CSS (1.16 MB reported by pingdom), but I don’t have the expertise to suggest remediation steps on that. Also, I would not suggest a Windows server. In my experience WP lives most happily on a LAMP stack.

Thanks for your response – the 404 issue has been resolved – I think by removing the w3 cache plugin. Yes it is slow so I do need to work on that. Will try PHP 7

    Thanks again
