• Hi,

I just created our local school’s website using WordPress and the Hestia theme. The old site used CMSMadeSimple, but the software is not very well maintained, so I decided to migrate to WordPress:

    [ redundant link removed ]

We also have translations in several languages for our site. The main site is in french, but we also have versions for english, german, spanish and portuguese.

Here’s what I’d like to know. Can I have the WordPress admin interface in french, and the site in a different language like, say, german or portuguese? Or do I necessarily have to use the same language for the site and the admin interface?

    Cheers from France,

    Niki

PS : I forgot to say that each translation has its own subdomain: en.scholae.fr, es.scholae.fr, de.scholae.fr and pt.scholae.fr.

Moved to Fixing WordPress. Also don’t repeat your link like that, just use the link field. You look like a spammer when you do what you did.

    Hi Niki,

Correct me if this is not what you’re trying to achieve.

I believe you can change your backend site language without affecting your frontend by going to:

Settings –> General –> Site Language

This shouldn’t affect your frontend language.

    Cheers,

    Unfortunately, this doesn’t work.

When I open Settings > General > Site Language, I have the following:

    Installed: French

    Available: [List of all languages]

Now when I select German and save modifications, Site Language reverts back to French and nothing happens.

    Now I’m clueless.

    Are you using Multisite?
Also do you have any multilingual plugins installed such as WPLANG?

No multisite. But I just gave up. I installed a localized version for each site, with the admin interface in the same language as the site, and now I have a dictionary to grasp the various menu entries.
