Installs unwanted “framework”

  • When I installed this plugin I noticed that in addition to the plugin settings menu, there was another new menu item under Tools, for something called “Redux Framework 3.6”. When I removed the plugin, the Framework was also removed. Note that the default for uninstalling the plugin is to NOT delete all of the files it installs, so who knows what you’ll be left with if you don’t change the settings before uninstalling. Very sneaky, I don’t care if it works or not, I don’t like these tactics at all.

    The plugin comes with a framework called Redux. Redux adds this additionally menu entry “Redux Framework 3.6” while the plugin is enabled.
    If you deactivate the plugin no files are removed.

    so who knows what you’ll be left with if you don’t change the settings before uninstalling. Very sneaky, I don’t care if it works or not, I don’t like these tactics at all.

    If you enable “cleanup” in the settings then the database table is dropped and the most options are deleted. It has nothing to do with the framework.
    In any case the framework is removed if you remove the plugin. So I don’t really understand what’s sneaky about this.

    What’s sneaky about it is that I installed a plugin that’s purpose is to log emails, and in addition to that I got a bunch of other unrelated stuff I didn’t expect, ask for, or want. Nowhere in your description of what the plugin does is there any mention of this framework or even the name “Redux”.

    The framework is an implementation detail of the settings for the plugin. It is used for the settings page and everywhere in the plugin where these settings are evaluated. I could develop my own settings mechanism with all the sliders, toggles etc. But I decided to use a sophisticated and very neat framework. The drawback of this is an additional settings page made by the framework “Hi there! This is redux a settings framework. You can also install the redux plugin for updates. Probably even more plugins will use redux in the future because WordPress doesn’t provide a proper settings framework.”

    I understand that’s a bit annoying. I don’t need this redux submenu either but the framework authors made a decision to use it.

    I really appreciate your feedback! I maybe replace redux with an lighter implementation in the future.
