  • Hi dawncseo.
Does this zip file conatins wp-content, wp-admin and wp-includes? where are you trying to import that zip file? and what error messages are you getting?

    Hey Dawn,

Your link https://seo-developer.com/ opens a WordPress hosted site. That means WP is already installed on your GoDaddy hosting…
You must have got your WP username and password to log in and make changes you wish.

    — By the way one of the best ways to upload a file to your server is ftp or sftp. You can use clients like cyberduck or filezilla to upload/modify files using ftp/sftp

Often times premium themes will come as a single zip file. Sometimes there will be multiple files and folders inside, including the theme itself. You will need to upload that theme file instead of the entire zip if that is the case.

It does contain those files. And from the wp dashboard, tools, import, wordpress:Import posts, pages, comments, custom fields, categories, and tags from a WordPress export file.

then i choose the file from my pc and click import/upload. And that’s when I get the error.

    Import WordPress
Sorry, there has been an error.
File is empty. Please upload something more substantial. This error could also be caused by uploads being disabled in your php.ini or by post_max_size being defined as smaller than upload_max_filesize in php.ini.

I thought I could migrate it but the guy i purchased from told me to get linux/cpanel hosting, not wordpress. But then I asked someone else to set the domain back up like it was when i purchased it and he set up the wordpress login…

If you are trying to install a theme’s zip file, go to Administration > Appearance > Themes and press ‘Add New’. You will see a screen showing you themes from www.remarpro.com’s themes directory. You will need to press ‘Upload Theme’ then you will see the ‘Browse’ button, now select the theme’s zip folder from your computer. Or go to https://seo-developer.com/wp-admin/theme-install.php?upload

Make sure your theme’s zip file doesn’t contain any other folders than the theme itself.

Alternatively, you can extract theme’s zip file and upload the extracted folder via FTP inside of wp-content > themes directory.

The area under Tools > Import/Export is used to import/export content from WordPress or other supported platforms.

    First things first…

Hello. I purchased a domain and was given a zip folder of files containing a wordpress site.

Who and where did you get these files from?

Did you used to have a site before? yes/no?
    If so, where was it?

As you can see – https://seo-developer.com/ – you already have WordPress installed and the default Twenty-Sixteen theme running in it.

I purchased the domain from flippa. The site was set up and the domain was transferred to my godaddy account. Then he sent me a zip folder with all the files from the previous set up. Everything is in it…images, content, wordpress plugin’s, etc. He then told me to purchase linux hosting, not wordpress hosting. But then i had someone else set the site up for me, and that guy didn’t install the site files, he just set it up with wordpress. I don’t mean to be confusing but that’s what happened. Any ideas? And thank you very much for your help!

I purchased the domain from flippa.

    Flippa is a reseller.

The site was set up and the domain was transferred to my godaddy account.

    This is normal.

Then he sent me a zip folder with all the files from the previous set up. Everything is in it…images, content, wordpress plugin’s, etc.

This is probably an entire website including database and WordPress.
Who is “he”? …the person from Flippa?

He then told me to purchase linux hosting, not wordpress hosting.

Which makes me think that this zip file is a backup of an entire site which needed to be installed.

But then i had someone else set the site up for me, and that guy didn’t install the site files, he just set it up with wordpress.

WordPress is probably already within the zip file.

You need to contact the person you purchased this from, ask what is in the zip file, and what you should do with it. The person needs to be specific. Ask if you purchased an entire website including WordPress.

If you are having access to the FTP of the domain, Then just download FileZilla app and Extract the wordpress files in the root folder.. Then.. Just head to your website URL and.. there you would be asked to setup with new WordPress account and whatsoever.. Its simple!

    Hi guys,

FYI I created a highly detailed step-by-step tutorial for migrating a WordPress site to GoDaddy, including how to test before pointing your domain name, etc. – you can see it here: https://bobmckay.com/web/wordpress/idiots-guide-migrating-wordpress-godaddy-managed-hosting/
