Installing WP prior to pointing domain name

    Hi there,

    I’ve been asked to redevelop a website using WP. The website, which is not a WP site, has an existing domain name, let’s call it newsite.com.

    The site will be hosted on my server. So, my plan is to fully develop the WP site on my server, then point the domain name to my server.

    To do this, I would start by creating an account for newsite.com using WHM/cPanel. I would then access the account using my server’s IP address and begin building out the site via FTP and cPanel.

    To install WP, I would use my server’s IP address along with the username I created for the newsite.com account (e.g. https://71.30.70.170/~newsite)

    After finishing the site, I would then point the domain to my server’s IP address and change the WordPress address from https://70.38.71.170/~newsite to newsite.com

    Does this make sense? Does anyone foresee any problems doing it this way? Any alternative suggestions?

    as long as it’s a dedicated ip, that should work fine

    When you say dedicated ip, do you mean the ip should be dedicated just to that website?

    In other words, there shouldn’t be other websites/cPanel accounts sharing the same ip?

    no – just so you are always accessing that ip – nothing dynamic
    you say hosted on your server – I’m assuming it’s not a local install?

    That’s correct. I’ve installed it on my remote server, which has several dedicated ips. The website will always be accessing the same IP.

    Sounds like a sound plan my friend. I believe you can change the domain in WordPress too to make everything work sound when you point the domain, in the WordPress settings. Just a little pointer in-case you didn’t know.
