• Hi,

I know this has been asked before, but I am lost still.

I have a client who needs a WordPress website developed, but they can’t have their current site go down until the new one is ready. I don’t know how to do this. I’m not very good with technical server terms and the workings of a server and directories. I don’t wanna just try it and mess something big up.

Can anyone explain in easy terms how, or know a video tutorial of I can accomplish this? I use filezilla to manage these things. I usually just put up and “Under Construction Page”, but this particular person cannot have this.

    Thanks!

  • Install WordPress in a sub-folder of the domain and develop the new site there. Then when you are ready, take down the old site and see Allow WordPress to take over the root domain. The downtime should be limited to 10 minutes or less.

So essentially, say I am in my public_html folder and i have let’s say newsite.com. I would make a folder, maybe similar to what you do with a folder for images, and put WordPress there? Then I would move it into the main directory when its done and take down the old files?

    Correct.

Then I would move it into the main directory when its done

No. Please see the page I linked to above.

Create a sub domain and develop your new website there. So after you finish the website move it to the main domain.

Uh? Moving a site from a sub-domain is much more complex.

can’t we use htaccess settings after completion of new one
