Installing WP doesn't create database tables

Hi all,

I’m following installation guides I’ve found on the net and wp for installing to my localhost (using xampp on windows 8.1).

The first step of the installation hangs for a few minutes and no database tables are created. It then goes to a blank white screen.

The only difference between what I’m doing and what the guides are doing is; I’m using port 8080 instead of 80, as a system process is using that.

Does anyone have any ideas what might be happening?
Or what I’m probably missing(I’m new to php and wp)?
