Installing www.remarpro.com on home network drive (Seagate 1TB GoFlex Home)

    Hi all,

    I am completely new to WordPress so I would appreciate as simple as possible an explanation please if you can help me.

    I want to make a long term venture with my website (currently thinking of an affiliate site but not too sure). Just want to get the site operable first whilst I plan the long term goal for it. Therefore, rather than go the easier route with WordPress.com with some limitations and have to move to www.remarpro.com in the future probably, I would rather teach myself www.remarpro.com and have full functionality from the outset.

    Basically, I don’t want to install www.remarpro.com on my hard drive (I don’t have a personal laptop at the mo and don’t want to install it on my business laptop or my wife’s laptop), I would much rather install it on my home network shared drive (Seagate 1TB GoFlex Home) so I can access it from multiple laptops if need be for test and development to create my website an then when it is ready I will pay for web hosting and then upload it to a hosting server.

    – Is installing it on my network drive possible?
    – Is it exactly the same process as installing it locally on a PC hard drive?
    – If there is differences, it would be great to know what the process is?

    Like I say, a step-by-step process for a beginner would be great to get me up and running.

    Any other comments/feedback appreciated aswell.

    Which of those links would I use for install to a home network drive?

    Or do you need more info from me?

    I suggest that you use a method that is appropriate for your OS.

    Yes not too sure what it is…

    The network drive is Seagate 1TB GoFlex Home but I can’t find info on the OS…. Possibly Ubuntu Linux but not too sure.

    On my laptop or network drive?

    My laptop is Win XP but I want to install WordPress on the network drive and I am not sure what that OS is.

    You can install WordPress wherever you want but you will need to run a local web server on one of your computers to actually run it.

    Ok it sounds a little complicated and I am wondering if any extra work is worth it…

    I guess here’s the question.. Do you think I am better off doing this or just paying for hosting now while developing the site?

    (I guess I will want to back up the site at home anyway but that will be just WordPress files etc that can be stored on my NAS drive?)

    What do you think?

    If you intend to host the site on a remote server eventually, you might as well develop it there. Running a local web server isn’t for everyone. If you install WordPress in a sub-folder or use a maintenance mode plugin, you will be be able to work without anyone actually seeing the site until you are ready for it to go live.

    As a final question, I guess I could install WordPress on my nas drive and run a local webserver on the nas drive aswell instead of running a local web server on my laptop?

    Does the nas drive have a built in web server?

    Trying to find out but in the manual it has this functionality…

    even access GoFlex Home from your smartphone, such as an iPhone? or Android device, or from another portable entertainment device, such as an iPad?.

    So would I be right in thinking it does?

    There’s nothing that sounds like a true web server in there.

    I can’t see anything else in there about it…

    I don’t know what is involved in converting my laptop into a webserver but I am assuming that I can’t do the same thing on my NAS drive ?

    I am getting round to your way of thinking of just paying for the hosting now to avoid the headaches as I plan to get a plan with BlueHost eventually anyway and develop it there.

    That would depend upon what OS your are running on that laptop.

    No. You need to be able to run multiple software packages – eg PHP, MySQL and Apache.
