• Hi,

I just set up WordPress on a new domain. Before I uploaded the files to the top directory, I had just one file — an .htaccess file — which forces the HTTPS protocol and the WWW version of the site.

I want to know if this could’ve caused any problems with the installation. Additionally, is that .htaccess file even necessary for a WordPress site? Would WordPress have automatically reformatted URLs without the HTTPS and WWW?

I am being OCD about this. Please, experienced answers only.

    Thanks,

  • Did your website install correctly? i.e is it working?

That .htaccess modification should not have caused an issue with the install but if your installation did not complete or is not working you can remove the htaccess and all files and start the install again. After it completes you can edit the .htaccess to redirect to https.

Thanks for the replies. The install did seem to go over smoothly, and I haven’t encountered any errors when using the CMS for my first blog post.

From a technical standpoint, however, is there any problem whatsoever one could foresee resulting as a consequence of this .htaccess file? Furthermore, does WordPress do a thorough job of checking for errors during installation? Would it have detected the most minute problem and rejected the installation if there was any issue with the .htaccess file?
