I want to install WordPress on my windows computer. I want to do this to learn WordPress. I am particular interested in learning the tool Gutenberg for the creation / modification of HTML files.

I have installed XAMPP on my machine. I have not done a separate install of MySQL and I prefer not to if it is not required. What is the next step in the process of installing WordPress on my machine?

If the plan is to just get to know WordPress, then I recommend starting with Playground: https://playground.wordpress.net

You may find there’s a lot you can do without ever having to set up a local server environment.

Local server environments are generally only used by plugin/theme developers and people who contribute to WordPress’s development, and only because it’s quicker to make changes to local files than remote files.

Personally, when I did more development work, I just did it on a subdomain of my main hosted site. Despite the slight delay when working with remote files, it was truly easier than settings up and managing a local server environment.

    James,

I think the Playground you suggested is exactly what I want. I am going to skip the install.

    Thank you very much.
