• I have only a two letter domain name (??.id.au) and am experiencing problems installing WordPress correctly, in particular, permalinks don’t work and some of the themes don’t work.

Is there a problem with very short domain names?

Is there anything I can do (apart from getting a longer domain name) that can troubleshoot this issue.

    Thanks for any advice

  • What exactly is your directory structure to WP?
    i.e. https://www.??.id.au/blog
and what permalink structure are you trying to achieve?

The Directory where WordPress is installed is the root directory.

I tried both date and numeric permalinks and neither worked.

For info the theme I was trying to install was the little scary monkey theme found at https://scarylittlemonkey.com/

If you set the permalinks to default – does it work?
And a link would be beneficial at this point. (or do you mean you have literally 2 question marks in your domain?)

Sorry – there are no “??” in the domain name, its just that I haven’t got WordPress there anymore so I haven’t provided the full domain.

It does work when the permalink is set to the default which has the “?page=xx” after index.php.

Good. That means you screwed up the permalink settings when changed them ??
Do you have a .htaccess file in the WP’s root directory?
If yes, was it writable when you updated the permalinks?
(Did you hit the “Update” button, btw? – you have no idea how many times it is forgotten…)
    Does your server support mod_rewrite?

.htaccess was initally not in the root directory.
I created a .htaccess file and saved it to the root directory.
    I did hit “update” button.
It is a windows server, and another longer domain that I host with my reseller account did work with the changed permalinks.
I’m wondering whether the two letter domain name is what is causing the problem. I’ve had other issues ocassionally when completing forms on websites where the email address is being validated and it spits because the domain name is “invalid”.
I have installed, removed, installed and removed WordPress about 5 times and each time trying to change the permalinks settting it wouldn’t recognise the page structure, revert back to default and it all worked!
I have no idea being a newbie to WordPress.
