How do you upload a wp template theme into a sub domain.
Every time I do it, I get errors and have to resort to the old default template to get the site back.

What exactly do you mean by “sub domain?” Themes will only work if they are in /wp-content/themes/

The wp installation is not in the main root folder of https://www.bookpeg.com but I installed it in a sub-domain called https://pietrelcina.bookpeg.com (or https://www.bookpeg.com/pietrelcina)

The site works when I use the classic theme but when I ‘activate’ the theme that I uploaded to the themes folder (it shows in the list of themes in the control panel for wordpress) it gives me a stange error which says
Warning: sprintf() [function.sprintf]: Too few arguments in /home/bookpegs/public_html/pietrelcina/wp-content/themes/thesis_16b2/lib/admin/post_options.php on line 234

    That’s it.

    OK folks,
I found out what was wrong.
I had to log in via ftp and do the following in the folder ‘themes’ where I had installed the new template.

    # Set the permissions of your new layout.css file to 666.
    # Make sure your /cache folder’s permissions are set to 775.

Did it – and it worked!

    Bye
