• Hi, I’m shortly gonna have to install WordPress onto a Windows hosting environment. I thought I’d check with the webhost that there shouldn’t be any problems (having only normally installed under Linux before).

Anyway, they came back saying that WordPress will work on Windows hosting, but they can’t guarantee that full functionality and other plugins will work in this kind of environment.

Anyone any ideas as to what that last bit might mean (can’t guarantee full functionality and not all plugins will work?!?). Has anyone else got any experience of problems with installing under Windows environment?

  • Most of the functionality will work fine on Windows, all the basic stuff you need anyway, although it may not be quite as fast on Windows because it is not a native platform for PHP, saying thay, it is probably not significant enough to notice unless you’ve loaded it up with plugins.

You don’t get .htaccess on Windows so if you use that for anything usually, that won’t work. However the main thing you’ll probably find that that doesn’t work on Windows is the Search Engine Friendly URLS as that requires mod_rewrite which is also a Linux specific technology.

If you do use any plugins it is best to check if they do specifically work on Windows.

Generally, the best thing to do is just give it a go and see how you get on.

    I hope that helps,

    Gav.

    Hey thanks man.

Unfortunately the pretty permalinks is actually quite a nice feature in my mind (nicer than https://yourdomain.com/?p=1162 in any case). And I’ll be setting the site live on the Windows host having developed it all on my Linux platform. Ho hum…

Nice plug by the way!! ??
