I have a new client who wants to move his site and hosting to my servers (I currently have a reseller account). Lightspeed servers running apache. I want to keep the old site running until the new one is fully installed on my server before I update the DNS records.

I can easily establish the new account and install WordPress, however whenever I try to access the wp-admin login I am sent back to their current site on the old server. I do this by entering the IP adress/content/wp-admin.php, however it sends me to https://www.xxxxx.com/content/wp-admin where I get a 404 error because they installed in the root directory and I’ve installed in a /content/ directory on my server.

Without access to the login I cannot upload the theme.

    Anyone have any ideas?

    Many thanks in advance.

  • Your only option atm is to install the new site using a temporary url. You cannot have 2 WordPress sites using the same domain name.

There is another way you can access the site to get everything in order but it will require a dedicated IP. If you are on a dedicated IP you may be able to set your localhost up to access it.

    Hope that helps,

I have a similar problem. I am moving my website from the existing host to GoDaddy. My domain is registered with 1com. After installing WordPress on GoDaddy I have moved all the files in the folder public_html and wp-admin to the new host, changed the nameservers, IP address using domain management tools provided by 1com. On trying to open my website using browser I just see my index page with the theme (but the page is incomplete).

Also I am unable to login to my WordPress admin using my usual user name and password.

    Please help.

Here is a good article on creating an admin using MySQL:

    https://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/how-to-add-an-admin-user-to-the-wordpress-database-via-mysql/

Once you are able to access the admin dashboard you will be able to get everything in order on your site. You may need to reset theme, menu, logo, etc.

    Hope that helps,

    Don,
Thanks a lot. After a bit of tweaking my website runs fine now. I will now have to do some more tweaking to improve upon. I am also able to login. Could have been some temporary blocade. It is fine now. Thanks once again for your quick response and help.

    Samita,

Glad it’s all worked out for you and thanks for letting us know.

    Don

I am again back to square one. Fron yesterday evening again I found my website down. I thought it was a server trouble with Godaddy hosting. I waited constantly checking my website on https://www.updowntime.net (https://downuptime.net/creativegraphicsindia.com.html)

This morning I called up Godaddy support and they said that there was a plugin problem and I should re-instal the plugins. That did not work.
So I uninstalled the entire WP and reinstalled afresh. Then copied all content files, activated the plugins. But there is still a problem.
I see the home page theme only. All other 14 pages are not visible. Do I need to do something more now. Please help.

    Regards
    Samita
