Installing Network with Sub-directories on a subdomain

I have a clean/empty blog installation on https://blogs.example.com and wish to extend WP to Network with sub-folders like this:
https://blogs.example.com/blog1
https://blogs.example.com/blog2The installation works, kind of. The problem is that I cannot login to wp-admin.
https://blogs.example.com/wp-admin does not log me in, just redirects me to the login window with no messages
https://blogs.example.com/blog/wp-admin does however work, and I can login. However when posting/creating/saving and stuff, it redirects me to https://blogs.example.com/wp-admin and I get logged out.
This feels like a bug of sorts. Is there a hack or solution for this? Or have I done something wrong?
