Installed with Godaddy’s one-click, can I still get WordPressMU?

I’ve googled before and found pretty good instructions on converting WP to WPMU. Should be some good documentation out there. I switched to MU, didn’t like and switched back. It was pretty simple both ways.

Or…you can just wait a bit….when WP 3.0 comes out, it will be merged with WPMU

you can also check out the alpha/beta section on these forums for links to get dev versions of WP, and jump the gun by using a dev version of WP 3.0

Thanks for the response– out of curiosity, what was it about MU you didn’t like? I want to run about 10 blogs at once and keep them separate from each other but didn’t want to install it ten times and create ten MySQL dbs & accts, etc…

Umm….I think it was the way themes and plugins worked….. sorry, it’s been a while now.

If you are on godaddy, you have to pay extra to make WPMU work. You need to get the static IP address (for the multisite feature)….which is like 99 or 1.99 a month….just for info!

bah, really? I already have a hosting plan (one of their larger ones), and figured it’d come with everything I need.. the GoDaddy support staff is so hit-and-miss I can’t imagine i’d be able to get someone on the phone that is versed in WPMU configs.. But thanks for the info — this is my only option if I want 10+ blogs but not have to install normal WP 10 times, right?

I’m not totally sure how things work on WPMU now. I’ve been hearing some stuff about domain mapping on WPMU…..but I’m not at all familiar with it.

Perhaps there is a way to set up WPMU and use existing domains/subdomains without needing the static IP.

The static IP was for wildcard DNS entries, so users could sign up for your WPMU site and get their own blog at username.yourdomain.com

you’d have to do some more research to see if you can just use existing domains/subdomains/subdirectories with WPMU without the wildcard since you’re going to be pre-planning/configuring your domains and don’t really need the wildcard feature to let users sign up for their own blogs

It;s GoDaddy’s choice to require MU with a static IP. On other hosts, it does run on shared IP addresses. GoDaddy does this even if you use subfolders, which don’t need the wildcard subdomain.

the domain mapping plugin works on either kind of install.

You have to take down the existing WP install if you want MU.
You can’t “hook up” exisiting installs into it, even if they are subdomains or whatever.

Everythign has to be imported into the main MU install.

I woudl whole heartedly recommend you mostly find a new host.

I am a GoDaddy customer and was ready to initiate a WPMU/Network install.

The way GoDaddy sets up their hosting accounts is such that if you want to use SUBDOMAINS, you must purchase a dedicated IP address from them.

If you’re using subfolders, rock on.
