As explained in the docs, your tags need specific classes in order for the syntax highlighting to work, and you need to enable either Highlight.js or Prism.js in the plugin settings.
Code escaping without syntax highlighting, however, works on for all <pre>
and <code>
tags without any required classes, but does need to be enabled via the settings in order to work.
