Installation trouble

I installed WP using hostgator and fantastico. It looks looks like its working, I even get a confirmation e-mail with my WP- admin password etc. When I go to the site, word press has not installed. When I click on the link to the site from the confirmation e-mail I got I get a ‘500’error.
What does this mean? Does anyone know how to fix it?
