    Hi All,

I am new to wordpress installation on a local machine. I am a MAC user and am trying to install wordpress 2.9.1 on my osx 10.6 using xampp.

when i try and go to https://localhost/wordpress/wp-admin/install.php the page shows me and error saying :

    Can’t select database

We were able to connect to the database server (which means your username and password is okay) but not able to select the wordpress database.

    * Are you sure it exists?
    * Does the user tuts have permission to use the wordpress database?
    * On some systems the name of your database is prefixed with your username, so it would be like username_wordpress. Could that be the problem?

If you don’t know how to setup a database you should contact your host. If all else fails you may find help at the WordPress Support Forums.

    please help…

  • Why are you using XAMPP? You need to have XAMPP running to ensure your site will be online. And since your using a laptop for a webserver, it will
    1) Drain your battery
    2) The speeeds will be very slow for other users and
    3) Most isps don’t allow it

Make sure you turned on MYSQL/Apache and also make sure you added the user to the database…

I strongly suggest you find a webhost, there are tons of free ones out there
