OK, so according to the the instructions this is what I did –
Unzip the package in an empty directory and upload everything….not sure where to, so its on my PC in a folder called WP41 ie done.

Open wp-admin/install.php in your browser. It will take you through the process to set up a wp-config.php file with your database connection details…..DB? Huh?
Got an error window – “Windows cant open this file…what do you want to do” (well I’d like to post the image here for starters!)

If for some reason this doesn’t work, don’t worry…. hmmm?
It doesn’t work on all web hosts. Open up wp-config-sample.php with a text editor like WordPad or similar and fill in your database connection details.

    …web host? Database? Huh?

And this is a “famous” 5min installation…Jeez, looks like I’m in for a long hard ride?
ANy HELP most welcome please!! (Maybe Blogger wasn’t so bad after all?)

  • If you are installing it locally, have you set up a server environment?

WordPress uses PHP which runs on a server. If you want it to run on your computer, you’ll to follow the link supplied above on setting up a localhost. If you want it to be live on the internet then you’ll need a web host, godaddy or host gator or whatever.

    Ok, thanks for that.
Seems like I’m playing the wrong game. All I wanted was to transfer my google blog to WP. Came across WP.org & WP.com…..read about the differences & figured WP.org was the more flexible, pro way to go – especially as I wanted a non-generic WP domain.
Q: Am I right abt this or have I got it wrong?

So IMO, does the 5min installation assume the following –

    You’ve got yr own domain…
You’ve got it hosted someplace …
You’ve uploaded WP to yr hosts’ server….
    You’ve Unzipped setup, etc etc.?

Then yr good to go ie Start blogging?
    Thanks in advance.

Just a question – can I get going on WP.com & migrate to WP.org once I’ve done my google blog transfer & found a domain that hasn’t been taken …..which in itself is a big ask!

You can move your content from there – but it’s quite a bit of work to do that and to set up the site again.

But you CAN have a custom domain on WordPress.COM – have you read this?

BTW, most good hosts have a 1-click install, so there’s no messing around with any of that – see:

Hey WPyogi – thanks for the comparison link!

Having read that, I figure my time is more productive writing than tech’ing so for the immediate future, its off to WP.com land I will go…
    Muchas gratias my friend.

Sounds good- certainly true if you just want to write and not spend time being a techie ??

You can always move later if you decide you want more options.
