Install WP in a Sub-directory, without effecting the root

I have a client with an installion of Joomla running at https://www.example .com.

They want to switch to WP (of course!), if I first install WP in a subdirectory like https://www.example.com/wp this will not effect the current Joomla site in the root will it?
