• I need to rebuild and pre-fill a website on a server, while the old website in Joomla is live on another server. The rebuild will run for a number of weeks or maybe even longer. WordPress keeps refusing to install without a domain name (from installatron). Why is this bug in the installation process? It’s very impractical, while wordpress itself is so userfriendly.
After the install I can access the site.
Is there a workaround which I can use form my mac?
    Tx.

  • My experience is on HostGator servers, so factor that into the answer.

Since you can change the domain name later, can you just pick something that is temporary to satisfy the installer? I have done this in the past for prospects who already had a domain name — and I just used their domain name for the install… even though their nameservers were not pointing to the new hosting account yet.

I also have a few “temporary” domain names that I can use to build sites with like “sitemast-XXX.info” where XXX is the type of site I am working on. This approach also makes it easy for clients and prospects to view the demo of a working in-progress site.

just set it up in a test folder – then when ready, move it

I have one complication: the new site is not on the old server. I cannot enter the old setup. It has to be on a new package. The option through the vbsql7 suggestion delivers refusal to install, because the domain does not point there. Why is this check built in? Don’t see the point, complicates things.

it doesn’t matter. you can go ahead and put it on a new server or on your own computer. give it your server IP address or use localhost if you’re installing it locally.

when you’re done, copy the files and the database over to the new server, following the instructions for moving wordpress as some of the fields need to be changed.

there’s no way you can install it without a domain name because there would then be no way you could access the site or the admin panel. where are you supposed to point your browser to if there’s no domain name?
