• Hello Everyone,

Just installed WP.org as an app from my ISP(123-reg.co.uk) for the first time. I’m using a sub-directory for the WP files but the site will reside in the root of thefencingcoach.org.uk. The install seem to go OK and am now following instructions to complete this process.

I’ve copied index.php file to the root directory and understand I need to do the same for the hidden ‘.htaccess files’ but can’t see them. I’m using FileZilla 3.3.1 to do this, I’ve set FileZilla’s Server option ‘Force showing hidden files’ to ‘selected’ i.e. ‘ticked’. Still I can’t find any hidden files that start with a period(.)?

    Are these files always installed?
    Where could they be?
Should I be making further setting changes in FileZilla before these files will show themselves?

All help gratefully accepted by this newbee, thanks in anticipation.

  • Are you using custom or default permalinks?

    Hello esmi,

    Thanks for your prompt response.

First time I’ve used this programme.
Not got that far so must assume these are set to default.

    Regards Pete

If you are using default permalinks, then you probably will not have an .htaccess file – so don’t worry about it..

    Hello esmi,

I’ve been reading up on Permalinks and have now changed the setting and behold, I now have a .htaccess file!

Thank you. Problem solved, but I still can’t see the test pages I’ve created. I’ll keep digging… Pete

FTP into your site (or use whatever file management application your host provides) & delete the index.html file in your root domain folder.

    Hello esmi,

I think I’m misunderstanding something here. I thought that WP would let me create the web site pages in situ, on my ISPs server.

Do I need to create them on my PC (with WP?) and then upload them to my ISPs server using FileZilla/FTP?

    Thanks for your time… Pete

I thought that WP would let me create the web site pages in situ, on my ISPs server.

It does. But your host’s index.html holding page is simply in the way now.

OK I’m starting to get it.

Tried to Delete the index.html using 123-reg.co.uk ‘s File Manager. But the file persists.

    Thanks for your help.

If you continue to have problems with this holding page, contact your hosts for assistance.

    Dear esmi,

Today is a new day, happy one too.

I was just about to enquire with my ISP 123-reg.co.uk about deleting the index.html file which I had failed to do so with both their File Manager utility and FileZilla when I tried to recreate the action so I could document it accurately.

I tried the delete using their File Manager and the file deleted instantly! On enquiry I found the the ISP was under a serious DDOS attack when I was working with my site. A coincidence? However problem now resolved.

    Thank you again.

Definitely not a coincidence but I’m glad you got it sorted. ??
