• I just got thru transferring a fresh copy of the latest WP to a different server (for a different site than my current), and everything is set to go, I even got in and got my configuration file updated. However, I am unable to open any files, I get a persistent 404 error “the file was not found on this server, etc” which is very frustrating… I’ve checked on the CHMOD end of things and that is set on 755. I’m afraid to touch anything in there, being as I’m still not an expert in these matters.

This server is shared with a friend and she has wiped my database more than once, in hopes it would help the situation. And as far as being any further aid, she is also stymied just as I am…

So now what? Weird that I can EDIT files but not OPEN any of them, since the system tells me they don’t exist!!

  • blueamulet, Are you sure that your DNS is pointing to the proper location?

Is your WordPress and Blog URL correct? For help adjusting this, see: https://www.tamba2.org.uk/wordpress/site-url/

If that doesn’t work, can you provide your domain name here, along with a link so we can see the 404 error?

I have no idea, bh_WP_fan; in fact I’m not even sure what DNS is! lol-

On the shared server, I don’t have an url for the blog yet, since I can’t get the index or login files to open.

Let me get you a link so that you can (I hope) see what’s going on. Without me having to download Skype which, as I say, might not do well on dialup…

    Actually it’s a sub-domain, but whatever… ??

My friend named her domain sea-meets-sky, and here is the link to my persistent error message:

    https://sea-meets-sky.com/wordpress/wp-login.php

It’s a subfolder, not a subdomain, just for fun clarification.

But nothing exists at sea-meets-sky.com/wordpress … just as simple as that. There is no WordPress installation there. My guess would be that, if you have WordPress installed, you have it installed in a different folder and not the wordpress folder.

A 404 error can only come up in one situation, and that is if something doesn’t exist where it is trying to find it. In this case, the wordpress folder doesn’t exist. You may have a wordpress folder somewhere in your friend’s account, but that folder must be located directly in the root of the folder for sea-meets-sky.com in order to work properly.

I would suggest checking with your friend on this.

    Yeah, what fun, huh? LOL

Well, this is really getting strange.

When I first transferred my WP over to the subfolder/subdomain/whatev’, it was put right into the root folder. I didn’t see any public_html directory as I have seen elsewhere and been told we MUST use. My friend said it wasn’t important. Hmmm.

Since the new upload was obviously in the main root and I was even able to EDIT files, it was bizarre IMO that I could not OPEN any of them, in order to do the usual final “official” installation (which if I recall we do with the index.php).

So, my next move was to create a public_html directory all on my ownsies. Then I moved the whole kit & caboodle over, into said directory, with renewed confidence that this time, all would be well. But. Still. No way, Jose. Gettin’ stranger and stranger.

I have WP installed elsewhere (different host), and at that location it was placed in the provided public html folder. I got easily in, did the final install, and Voila’.

Therefore, I am not sure what options are left?

My friend is no help at all, she has no patience and won’t cooperate. I’ve quit asking for her aid, I’d rather not get my head bitten off again. And yet, oddly, a few years ago she was the one to introduce me to the wonders of WP…

Wish I knew exactly what host she is using. I’d delve into the mysteries and even try to contact somebody there, to find out something about why this is proving so difficult, when it should be a snap.

Doing a whois lookup on sea-meets-sky.com, I see that it has the following NameServers:

    DNS1.VALIDNS.COM
    DNS2.VALIDNS.COM

The registrar is GoDaddy, but the NameServers do not seem like GoDaddy NameServers. Looking them up, they come from gotonames.com, so that may possibly be the host you need to contact.

I feel like a detective, of sorts, lol-

I typed in sea-meets-sky.com on the “find domain name” dialog and it gave me this:

Invalid Domain format, only Alphanumeric characters are accepted and – no space, hyphens or periods.

It’s nuts that I can’t ask my friend whose server I’m sharing what the name of the host is. Her Dad seems to be a non-approachable person!

Well, this is not an emergency, I can set up WP somewhere else. I just wanted to take advantage of the shared space which has been available to me for a long time. I feel that my site (or, sites) would be a little bit more secure if placed there. Although as we all know from experience, online nothing is sacred!

When you installed wordpress the last step you enter the user name and password for you admin panel you need to use that.

i forgot to add that when I typed in the domain name of my pal, it was on gotonames that I did so, and got that error message.

@neotutorials, there wasn’t any means to enter my username and password, since the server will not allow me to open any files online. As I say, it’s very odd that I can edit files, and yet I can’t OPEN any of them.

Can you provide me a link, please? ??

thank very much. its very interesting
