Site Kit is up and running on my website. I’ve rebuilt the website on a different server using a temporary URL. Now I’m about ready to make the DNS change that will point to the new version of the site. I need to know the correct sequence of steps to implement Site Kit on the new version of the site. Can I install and activate it while still operating with the temporary URL? Or do I need to wait until after I throw the DNS switch, so that I’m not activating it with the “wrong” url?

    Hi @creekdweller,

Great question regarding your site move. As there are different methods to migrate a site or switch URLs you may wish to perform a reset on the temporary site, before then migrating the site to the final domain and installing and setting up Site Kit from there. If it’s a new domain you don’t need to wait for any DNS changes as long as the domain name is pointing to the correct records.

Note also that typically Site Kit will automatically recognize a URL change and suggest you set up the plugin once more on the new domain. Even if you don’t perform the above, depending on how you migrated your site all may work fine. For best practice it is ideal to reset Site Kit first if the URL will be changing.

Let me know how you get on after attempting Site Kit set up on the final domain, and best of luck with the migration.

Thanks for the response. The old domain has Site Kit installed, but we have not yet installed Site Kit on the new version of the site. If I understand correctly, there’s no point in doing so before making the DNS switch. Also, there’s no need for a reset, because Site Kit is only on the old version, which disappears once the DNS switch propagates.

    • Old version of mysite.com is up and running with Site Kit
    • New version is built at temp.com
    • When ready, we change the new version’s name to mysite.com and point DNS to the new server
    • As soon as the DNS change propagates, mysite.com is the new version without Site Kit. We then install, activate and setup Site Kit on the new version of the website

Does this make sense? Or is there anything we should be doing to prepare Site Kit before the DNS change?

One other question. Is there anything we can do to make setup easier on the new website? Any way to clone or record all settings from the old one?

When you mention a DNS change it sounds like you’re moving a domain name (temp.com) to another provider. If your new domain (mysite.com) is already pointing to the correct host, and in turn – new site, you don’t need to make any DNS changes. Is only a matter of installing Site Kit on this new domain. As it sounds like this is the case, with you mentioning so above, have you tried to install Site Kit on this new site?

When setting up Site Kit on a new domain, Search Console will need to reflect data based on the new domain. Site Kit takes care of this for you by connecting your site with Search Console, creating a property for the new domain or using an existing property if you already have one for this domain.

In the case of Analytics, you can use the same previously connected property on the old domain if you wish, in order to keep new hits recording to the same property.

As for AdSense if applicable to you, unfortunately users need each domain name already approved before ads will appear. Data such as ad performance is not transferable from one AdSense site to another.

Let me know how you get on with the site move, or ask if you have any further questions.
