• I want to install wordpress 3.1.3 on my local PC. I have installed xampp on my pc, if I go to https://localhost/wordpress/wp-admin/install.php I just get a message that it seems the wp.config file is missing.
I did change the wp.config-sample file to wp.config.php.
Maybe I am putting the wp.config file in the wrong place, hope someone can help.

The reason you getting that is that the install program needs wp.config-sample.php to create the wp-config.php so rename it back and then try the install program.

I did change it back, now I only get a page not found message.

Do you have any wp-config.php file in wordpress folder if si delete the file and try

Why is it appropriate to retain the wp-config-sample.php file when the instructions specifically say to rename it as wp-config.php in order to do the installation?

You do not have to keep it as long as you one on your computer.

I have not been able to change wp-config-sample.php file to wp-config.php. When I press F2 it does not open the file name for editing, and when I right click, there is no “rename” option. Is there some other way to change the filename?

Yhanks for all the help I have now installed wordpress on my pc.

@mudwoman, I opened the wp-config-sample.php file with notepad and made all the changes on there. I then saved it as wp-config.php
remember to choose “all files” if you do use windows.

I tried to save it to the same directory as the WordPress download, but it won’t let me. I think I’m missing a step. I downloaded the program, double-clicked on the zip file, and it opened, and I see all the files there, but can’t alter any of them. What is the next step? Do I need to manually move the files out of the zip folder? Where to? Is there a better thread for my issue? I am using WP on my website, but want it on my PC. I’m obviously pretty green, here.
