Install fails and then plugin doesn't show up anywhere

The install fails unless you download the file and repackage the zip file in the correct format so that wordpress recognises it.
Once you repackage the plugin it can install but it doesn;t do anything. No sign of the plugin can be seen in the WordPress interface.
