Install fails after step 2

    Hi Guys, can anyone suggest a solution to this installation problem.

    First off I’ve repeated this cycle many times over three days so the answers probably not delete and try again!

    I’ve downloaded the latest version of wordpress 2.7.1 onto my machine (Sun workstation runing Vista64 – all software with latest service packs and 20Gb ram).

    Extracted the files, renamed wp-config-sample.php file to wp-config.php and modified the username, dbname, pasword and server to the correct values for my ISP – Demon Internet.

    I’ve uploaded the files using filezilla (ascii transfer) to a subdomain /docroot/blog/.

    Initiated https://example.com/blog/wp-admin/install.php and can always get as far as the screen asking for blog name and e-mail address.

    When I hit the “log in” button the server just seems to hang.

    Looking at the processes log I see a whole lot of sleeping processes like this:

    If I try to re install sometimes I get the message that WordPress is already installed and sometimes the server again hangs.

    After each failled installation I’m deleting the server folder, deleting all mySQL tables using phpMyAdmin, deleting the extracted files and re-extracting (and I’ve tried re-downloadiny from WordPress) and begining over. (soon be able to do it all from memory)

    I have previously and successfully installed word press on a UK2 (ISP) server using the same tools (mainly filezilla + (variously)firefox/IE7/Flock as the browser interface).

    I’ve also read through the forum and tried to install without the plugins and themes folders – no difference.

    I’ve tried running simple test php code in the wordpress folders on the server and it executes fine – also checked permissions, again fine.

    So the symptom I’m left with is that the wordpress code just does not seem to execute.

    MySQL is ver 4.0.30
    phpMyAdmin is 2.5.5-pl1

    My guess is that either the files are somehow being corrupted or that there is a php level incompatability that I haven’t identified.

    and of course the nice tech support people at demon say “wordpress not supported”!

    I’ve looked round the forum and can’t find an answer that looks right though a number of you have reported the white window of death problem – that’s why I’m posting full details.

    The solution is probably simple and staring me in the face if I could recognise it but if any of you people out there can give me any ideas as to what to try next to diagnose and fix this problem I’d really be greatfull.

    This problem was solved by good advice from SAMBOLL – try version 2.5.

    The moral of the story is don’t use Demon Internet to host WordPress because their platform uses down level software

    AND

    don’t use Demon Internet for anything else because there overall technical support is very, very poor.

    I’ll be moving the site to the other ISP we use UK2 who are fare better on every count.
