  • A childtheme will not change any of the content of your site.

A childtheme is used to do the alternative styling of the site and contains the stylesheet and php-files you may choose to change in order to give your site the colors, fonts, look and feel you choose, without the risk of loosing everything [as far as the styling is concerned], when the theme is updated by the authors.

So feel free to create a childtheme e.g. use ‘one click childtheme ‘-plugin to create one.

Installing and activating a child theme shouldn’t affect any plugin data. If you want to be on the safe side, you can do a database backup before you change themes.

To test changes like this, I recommend setting up a local environment on your computer. If you have a Mac, MAMP is pretty easy to setup and then you can install WordPress and play around with it without affecting a live site. Here’s more info:

If you’re using Windows, I’ve heard that WAMP is pretty easy to install too.

Great. That’s a relief. I might just give Mamp a go.

    Thanks for the advice.

Oh, if I set up MAMP will it allow me to use the information in the existing database/website that I have already created. I have already set up the site with a number of pages and posts related to the plugin Events Manager.

    Cheers.

With MAMP, you could connect to your live database, but that kind of defeats the purpose of having the test/local environment. Your best option is to export your live site and import it on your local site.

Good, that’s what I was trying to say (but didn’t know how). ??
