• I wish to install wordpress to test with Wamapp. I have installed Xamapp on an new External drive so we can swap from computer to computer and I want to know if I should or can install the wordpress files to the same partition of the same external hard drive?

    OR

Can we just have wordpress installed in the internal hard drive of every computer that we want to swap to and use it that way?

We have the latest downloads of each program as of today 4th December 2013.
I think I can handle the installation just want to know what is best from the above options.

  • Cheers.
While i work on Mac, it should be no difference.

You can install WordPress on both of them the way you describe. However, be sure to not run them at the same time. If you are going to use XAMPP, stop WAMP (i don’t know if it’s like MAMP (Mac) with an start and stop application) and vice versa.

You could install WordPress on the external harddrive (in XAMPP), and then do a symbolic link of the WordPress install in the WAMP directory (so you only need one WordPress install).

Now i don’t know how it works on Windows, but i think it will work the same as in *-nix systems (Mac OS X, Linux, BSD and so on).

Remember, a symbolic link is not the same as a shortcut, even if it looks like that.

You can have as many local web servers on the drive as it has room for ?? XAMPP, WAMPServer, Uniform Server, etc., but as mentioned, only one running at a time (generally).

And within each of those local server’s web root, you can have as many installs of WP, or any other script such as Joomla!, Drupal, eFront, Moodle, PrestaShop, etc., as it has room for. But you can have them all running at the same time ??

One more possibility for you… this is completely portable and stand-alone. No installation required, contains the server environment and WordPress in one package. Just un-zip it (run the self extracting .exe) and place the entire directory on the target drive or device. I’ve run this from a thumb drive before to move my work between machines. Your mileage may vary. ??
