insists an upgrade is available even though it's the latest version

  • I’m running the latest version of WordPress, yet it insists there’s an update available and wants to update from 3.0.1 to 3.0.1. When I go to the “Updates” panel-page it simply states that I’m already running the latest version, and then the nag-reminder to update disappears for a while until it reappears a few hours or a day at most later. And the cycle continues.

    Why is this?

    I upgraded to 3.0.2 the other day. It’s still doing the same thing. Insisting there’s an upgrade, yet running the version it’s insisting is available to upgrade to.

    Anyone have a clue?

    Still there, insists an upgrade to 3.0.4 is available even though I’m running it.

    I appreciate the massive silence on this issue, as it’s obviously a bug.

    That’s a helpful comment. Have I missed the part where you described what you’ve done to get to the bottom of this problem you are having?

    What have you done to troubleshoot this? Have you done the usual disable all your plugins, switched to Twenty Ten? Have you tried a manual upgrade to ensure that you really are running a successfully upgraded version?

    What does your copy of wp-includes/version.php say? Not the whole file just the version line. Usually the upgrade available bug means an incomplete upgrade.

    What I’ve done:

    1. Re-uploading all files, making sure everything got included.
    2. I always do manual updates since my webhost doesn’t have the functionality required for upgrades from within WP.
    3. Yes, I’ve tried disabling plugins and switching theme to Twenty-Ten.

    I’ve checked /wp-includes/version.php and it says 3.0.4. Apologies if I was grouchy, it’s just a bit of an annoyance even though it doesn’t affect functionality.

    No worries, happens to us all. Give this a try to see if it fixes the problem:

    1. Make a full file backup of your WordPress install and put that somewhere safe (off of your server).

    Also backup your database because you can never be safe enough.

    2. Download the current version and safe that on your blog where you can get easy access to it.

    3. Delete the entire wp-admin and wp-includes directories from your installation. Make sure you have your backups ready just-in-case!

    4. Extract the just downloaded release on top of your blog (this will put back wp-admin and wp-includes files and directories).

    5. Delete and files in wp-content/cache (also just in case).

    6. Log into your blog and see if that does it.

    If something catastrophic happens then restore that backup from step 1.
