Inserting images breaks text formatting

I’m creating a simple page, text with a few images. Everything works fine, text formatting looks the same in the visual editor as it does in preview, until I insert an image. Then visual editor looks fine, but text formatting in preview (color, font, size) is all wrong. I’ve cleared formatting and I’ve tried pasting the text as text-only to no avail. As soon as there’s an image in the line, text formatting goes out the window. Doesn’t matter whether image is aligned right or left; text wrapping itself works fine. What is it about the images that’s breaking my formatting? Any help appreciated. zh
