• Hi,

New to WP & have some basic questions in regards to adding code for ads, gadgets, buttons, etc. I have been reading through related posts in this forum but have some questions of my own. Is adding such code to my sidebar text/html widget considered a proper method?

From what I gather, if I wish to have ads run within, above or below posts, I will need to input the code directly into my template, is this correct & if so, where?

And what about using a plugin to achieve such results? Is this a viable option & if so, why a plugin as opposed to using a text/html widget & pasting code directly into the template? Again, although I have some html hacking experience, I am new to WP so any help would be appreciatated. Thanks!

  • All of the methods you mention are viable and reasonable options. It’s really down to where and how you want to do things that determines which option/tool is the best.

For example, to post ads between posts, I’d suggest using a combination of an ad plugin and some template editing. You can use widgets to add items to the sidebar or any widget-ready template.

Within posts, you can add your own markup using the HTML tab or, again, use a plugin that provides shortcode.

There’s no right or wrong way. It’s all horses for courses, really.

    esmi,

Thank you…great answers! In regards to

Your saying that I can insert ad code directly to a post, yes? However, that would only be on an individual post basis, correct? How/where would I go about adding code so that an ad would run in all posts, perhaps below the title or between paragraphs?

    Thanks!

To insert ad markup below the post title, you might want to edit one of the post templates. Either index.php, archive.php, category. php or single.php – depending upon exactly where/when you want this ad to appear.

If you want the ad within the paragraphs of a post’s content, you’ll need to add it manually to each and every post.
