• Since my site updated to 4.7.4 the Insert Link isn’t working properly while using Chrome.

    I usually do the following:

Write my text, highlight it and click Add Link (or CTRL+K)
In the window that pops up, add the link URL

So if I press the ENTER button at this point it all works.

However, I want my links to open in new tabs/windows so I press the Settings Cog icon on the right.
At this point, Chrome de-selects the text and when I accept the changes, nothing is added or changed from default text.

What it should be doing here, of course, is making the highlighted text into a link with the target=”_blank” attribute.

I tried the same flow in Edge and it works fine. So not sure what in 4.7.4 changed enough to get on the bad side of Chrome ??

I notice a similar issue was mentioned on an earlier version of WordPress but there didn’t appear to be a solution in that thread.

  • I believe this issue only affects touchscreen devices (like Microsoft Surface tablets).

@figureone, It might be a Windows issue, but it’s definitely not restricted to only touchscreen devices. The issue occurs on my desktop and my laptop.

I have the same problem here with Chrome.

The only way I found to make it works is to enter the URL directly into the Insert/Edit Link tool box. If I write it first with the rest of the text and try to activate the link, it does not work for me.

Under M.S. Edge, I have no problem with the link tool.

Same issue here — on a brand new and Chrome OS-updated ASUS chromebook. But the WordPress insert link function works in Chrome on an HP laptop running Windows. This is crazy.

Same, works fine using Edge on my desktop, doesn’t work with Chrome on the same machine.

Looks like whatever was changed that now adds the rel=”noopener noreferrer” tag into the HTML isn’t something Chrome/Firefox likes.

Before this tag was added into WordPress it all worked across browsers. So maybe some code in that area is causing Chrome to error quietly.

I’m having the same problem as is my friend and between our 4 sites, they use different plugins (apart from 2 which I’ve ruled out) and two hosts and two themes. The only thing in common seems to be Chrome. Just tried it in Firefox and for each site, it failed the first time and then worked fine! Driving me nuts to have to manually add links. Hopefully, if I stick to Firefox it will work OK. But I’ve seen that @semrocc is having this problem in Firefox, so I won’t be holding my breath.

I have the same problem with all my wp sites. I found if you just place your cursor where you want to place the link and text, click the link button and fill everything out in that – it will work. Usually I type the text first, then click on the link button to place the link – that no longer works. Very strange. You can always place the html on the code side of the page, but clicking the link button was much easier. Pat

Same for me. Insert link not working when highlighting the word in visual mode, but works on text mode

Yesterday, June 2, 2017, I experienced this same glitch using Safari 10.1.1

    1. Open a new post
    2. Type words using the Visual editor
    3. Highlight the words
    4. Click the Visual editor “Insert Link” icon.
    5. Highlight disappears
    6. I am able to insert the link using the Text editor

wanted to say that I have the same problem. the “insert link” does not work, very quirky, takes lot of tries & combinations to get it to insert a link. As others have described!!!

Hope WP can figure this out!

I have just updated to WordPress 4.8. It would appear that this issue has been resolved with the new version. Thank you, WordPress.

I am having the same problem. Do you think upgrading to WP 4.8 will help? I don’t like to be one of the first to upgrade until bugs are out.

I did the update to WP 4.8 and everything is alright now.

    Hi All,
I have the solution for this issue. Please see a video.

Hi I’ve a customer with the same problem. I’ve updated the website to wordpress 4.8 but she still can’t add links with the visual editor. It work only if I don’t select a word but obviously it add a link on nothing. In the console I can see this error:

Uncaught TypeError: Failed to execute ‘setStart’ on ‘Range’: parameter 1 is not of type ‘Node’
